A Senior Family Friendly Holiday

With the holidays just around the corner, many seniors may already be worrying about all the plans.  It helps to include your loved ones in the family holiday preparations, keeping them actively involved. Here are some great activities you can do with your entire family:

  • Cook a favorite meal together. Prepare a dish the senior once prepared as a holiday tradition. Involving the senior in the process, instead of making it for them, allows the senior to feel helpful and needed.

  • See the city’s beautiful holiday lights. Taking a senior loved one – especially a senior who can no longer drive – on a ride through town for an enjoyable evening together.

  • Watch old family movies together, or look at family photo albums together.

  • Play a favorite board game. It is important to get seniors minds engaged by playing games or doing puzzles. Focused interaction means a lot to seniors, especially during the busy holidays.

  • Address holiday cards. Sending holiday cards is a wonderful way to keep in touch with family and friends. Offer to address holiday cards for your senior loved one, helping them to maintain long-time contacts.

  • Sing carols together. During the upcoming season, involve your senior in singing holiday carols in the living room.  You don’t have to leave the house if you’re your loved one is more comfortable at home.

  • Bake holiday treats. The holidays are filled with wonderful traditions, especially traditions that can be tasted. Most seniors have holiday favorites. Find the senior’s favorite recipe and bake it together.
