ST. LOUIS – Adam Woodruff + Associates, an award-winning landscape design firm, has re-established St. Louis as its home base after three years on the East Coast.

Mr. Woodruff is best known locally for his exceptional seasonal displays at the Pierre Laclede Center and The Plaza in Clayton. His award-winning landscaping at the Bank of Springfield garnered widespread media attention, and a grand, prairie-style residential landscape in central Illinois is featured in Rochelle Greayer’s new lifestyle book published by Timber Press, to be released in 2014.

While residing in Marblehead, Mass., Mr. Woodruff maintained a business presence in the metro St. Louis area. At the same time, a shift in his business model afforded him the opportunity to travel widely in North America and Europe, where he toured naturalistic gardens, attended flower shows and participated in lectures and workshops.

“Adam Woodruff is a creative young designer, whom I first met in 2009,” says Piet Oudolf, the internationally renowned garden designer and author, acclaimed for his work on New York City’s High Line and Chicago’s Lurie Garden at Millennium Park. “Adam is eager to learn about the way we see gardens today. He travels extensively for inspiration, engaging with other leading designers. His work with tropical plants and more recent forays into naturalistic design confirm his talent.”

Mr. Woodruff’s work is informed by nearly twenty years of experience and a background in Botany. He strives to connect his clients to nature and the larger landscape while creating a rich, evocative experience for them. His projects cover the spectrum, from intimate residential gardens to large and sophisticated commercial properties.

“I have a passion for plants,” says Woodruff. His imaginative designs are stylized interpretations of nature, where plants are artfully blended in new ways. His plant palettes are diverse, ranging from lush seasonal displays of bold tropical foliage and high-impact annuals to soft prairie-inspired plantings that blend natives, ornamental grasses and perennials.

His interest is not purely aesthetic though; Mr. Woodruff’s plant selections and design solutions arise from a clear understanding of his clients’ needs and the unique characteristics of their site. His designs are thoughtfully conceived and orchestrated with a mind toward longevity, sustainability and predictable maintenance.

Says Bill Ruppert, Executive Director of the Horticulture Co-op of Metro St. Louis, “Adam is a uniquely gifted designer. He utilizes a diverse and exciting palette of durable plants that respond to the rigors of the lower Midwest environment.  His approach to design and plant selection is significantly benefited by Adam’s hands-on experience maintaining a variety of landscapes in our region.”

Mr. Woodruff’s work has been featured in Horticulture magazine, Consumer Reports and St. Louis Magazine AT HOME. He also has been published in Fine Gardening magazine, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and several trade journals. He is a frequent contributor to Designers on Design, the blog of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers.
