Woody’s In Frontenac And Mr. Guy In Ladue Voted Best Of The Best

These two boutiques are winners in St. Louis Magazine's annual A-List polling along with other Ladue-Frontenac shops.

Woody’s Mens Shop has been awarded the Editors’ Pick by St. Louis Magazine for best in custom men’s clothing. In addition, Mister Guy, The Men’s Store, was the number one choice by readers for men’s fashion—non-chain. Ladue and Frontenac runners-up in this category included Woody’s as well as Kim Kuehner Men’s Sportswear in Ladue and Sam Cavato Mens Wear in Frontenac. In fact, Ladue-Frontenac men’s shops took four of the five spots for readers’ favorite men’s store in this year’s St. Louis Magazine’s A-List 2011 Readers’ Picks.

“It’s just nice being recognized,” Maurice “Mo” Erwin, owner of Woody’s, said. “We’ve been around forever. It’s one of those overnight successes after 35 years.”

Erwin credits the store’s customer service and quality merchandise, particularly its custom work, for the recognition.

“Our custom business has grown over the last five years. The man who wants a suit or sports coat may want his own specifications on items like buttonholes, pockets, vents and material,” Erwin said. “We have 350 swatches from which to choose.”

Erwin also paid tribute to the store’s customers.

“St. Louisans are very loyal to their own which is why some of these long-standing restaurants and boutiques in our area have been around for so long.”

Unfortunately Erwin was out of town when the award was presented to the store.

“Mark (Scissors, store employee) called me and said ‘You just missed it. A limo pulled up with two beautiful women who got out and delivered the plaque.’ We didn’t even know we were in contention.”

At Mr. Guy, General Manager Doug Winship was in the store the day the award was delivered. He said that his store was selected by the readers because of the merchandise and customer service.

“A lot of our customers are second and third generation. There’s a group of St. Louisans who obviously have enjoyed shopping here over the years,” Winship said.

The stores will celebrate their awards at a party thrown for all the winners on Thursday evening.
