Father’s Day History

Father’s Day began in 1910 when Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Arkansas , but from Spokane, Washington wanted to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a widower and single parent of six, for all he did as a parent.

Sonora heard a sermon in honor of mothers and thought fathers deserved the same celebration of parenthood. Originally, she wanted to honor her father on his birthday, June 5, and told her pastor hoping he would give a sermon, but the pastor did not have enough time to prepare a sermon to honor fathers that quickly. The third Sunday in June was chosen by default.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a presidential proclamation in honor of fathers. The third Sunday in June was designated as Father’s Day. President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972 and Father’s Day became a national holiday.

This relatively modern holiday is now celebrated throughout the country and fathers are honored by their children and loved ones every year in June.
