What People Are Saying About Mizzou's Opener

MU Tigers win home opener against the University of Miami Redhawks, but it wasn't a pretty win.

One down and 11 to go. The Missouri Tigers won their home opener against the Miami of Ohio University Redhawks last Saturday on a scorching Faurot Field. The team, not so scorching. But, as they say, a win is a win is a win. Sports media weighed in on the contest.

www.muredhawks.com said the Redhawks “hung tough” in the loss to Missouri, but couldn’t produce many points in the 17-5 game that snapped the Redhawks’ six game winning streak at the end of their 2010 season. The Redhawks’ defense did a good job of holding the Tigers’ offense, but didn’t get much support in Don Treadwell’s debut as head coach.

R.F. Fallstrom in the Springfield News Leader wrote that Mizzou quarterback James Franklin's gut reaction was that he flunked his first career start."Umm, I probably failed this test today," Franklin said after their victory, tougher than expected, over Miami on Saturday. "I'd say, eh, around a D, maybe." Although his interception led to Miami of Ohio's lone score, he did run for one score and passed for the clinching touchdown.

www.Stjoechannel.com said, “The Missouri Tigers opened up the football season with a bit of a disappointing victory, if there is such a thing.” True, Tiger fans have been spoiled by their three former quarterbacks, Brad Smith, Chase Daniel, or Blaine Gabbert, but James Franklin knew that, giving himself a D-plus at first. “I just think that a win's a win and something that I'll have to learn to enjoy, and there's things that I'm worried about, things I'm focused on that I didn't do so well. So, I'll give it a 'C-minus' just to be more positive."

www.boston.com noted that Missouri’s 17-6 win over Miami of Ohio was the Tigers’ 22nd straight nonconference triumph.

Mark Blaudschun of www.bleacherreports.com said the 17-5 win left a lot of things to be desired. The offense looked stagnant at times. Meanwhile, the defense allowed a few long drives before forcing turnovers. If they can’t stop a team like Miami (Ohio), they are going to have a lot of trouble stopping Arizona State.

www.washingtonpost.com said not to be so hard “on the new kid at quarterback. Sophomore James Franklin knows he must get more comfortable Friday night at Arizona State. More stability on an injury-riddled offensive line would ease the transition and allow Franklin time to produce a few more big plays.
