The Area Abounds with Family Fun Events This Weekend.

Get out and celebrate - Spring is on the horizon.

With any luck, March will tiptoe in like a lamb, which is good news for those who want to get their kids out of the house. Here are six family-pleasing events for a variety of tastes.

 Centene Fitness First Fridays

Get fit and have fun by exploring the Magic House on the First Friday of every month. Families can stretch their muscles and minds as the take the 1,000 step circuit through the museum, and tour hundreds of fun and education exhibits. Along the way, they will find “Fit Facts” filled with useful health and nutritional information. Each month features a different fitness theme as well as special guests and activities. Start this Friday. The first 100 families to register online will receive a backpack filled with health-related education materials and fitness equipment.  Mardi Gras Gallery Hop

As part of the Artropolis Mardi Grass Gallery Hop, Fusion, a gallery with a collection of artist who offer a blend of arts, crafts, local music, and classes, is hosting an art reception with Mardi Gras-themed art. Guests can have fun with Mardi Gras facepainting or making Mardi Gras beaded necklaces with resident artists.

 When/Where:  Friday, March 4. 5 p.m.- 9 p.m., 209 Chesterfield Mall, 2nd level in the Sears Wing, Chesterfield, MO.

 Anniversary of the Dred Scott Decision

The Dred Scott Decision will forever be linked with St. Louis, and the  occasion will be commemorated with a day of presentation and trial reenactments at the Old Courthouse. Visitors can take part in trial re-enactments, reading scripts, arguing facts, and deciding a verdict in a historic courtroom. The theater in the Courthouse will show films from National Park sites featuring African American History.

When/Where: March 5. 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (Old Courthouse), 11 N. Fourth St.

 March Morpho Mania

Come to the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House during March and see over 3,000 big, bright, blue morpho butterflies fluttering around the tropical conservatory. Visitors will also learn about the critical role butterflies play in nature, and how the Butterfly House is involved with butterfly conservation efforts in Costa Rica.

When/Where: March 1-31, Tuesday through Sunday. 9 a.m – 4 p.m. Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House, Faust Park, 15193 Olive Blvd.                                    

Price: General Admission, $6; Seniors (65+), $4.50; Children, 3-12, $4; Children 2 and under, free. Missouri Botanical Garden members are also free.

 Preparing for the Garden

 Spring is not far away and when the weather cooperates, what better way to get energized for the season than by planning your garden. Chip Tynan of the Missouri Botanical Gardens will be giving tips on tomato planting.  The event will be held at Bowood Farms in the Central West End, and guests will also have a chance to peruse seeds and the accouterments of a good garden in the Farm’s amazing greenhouse and garden shop.

 When/Where: Saturday, March 5, 10 a.m. Bowood Farms, 4605 Olive St.

 Stroller and Wagon Float Contest

 Don’t let your kids miss out on basic Mardi Gras fun such as building a Mardi Gras parade float.  The Delta Winter Zoo allows your child to turn his wagon or stroller into a float, with prizes awarded in three categories: Best penguin float; best in Mardi Gras style; and best float made with recycled materials.  Register your float online by Friday, March 4, or bring to the Living World at St. Louis Zoo by 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 6.

 When/Where: Sunday, March 6. 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Lower Rotunda of the Living World at the St. Louis Zoo, One Government Dr.
