Students Chill Out With Friends: 'Patch' Gets the Scoop

Local students hang out at local ice cream and yogurt shops for a refreshing snack.

For local children and teens summer break has come to an end, but cooling off with their favorite flavor of ice cream or frozen yogurt could be the beginning of a new school year routine. Dipali and Jitu Patel, owners of Baskin Robbins in Ladue, said “kids come in every day after school for ice cream, but Friday is full inside and out.”

Students from RJA (Reformed Jewish Academy) gathered at Baskin Robbins to celebrate their first day back to school. Each one excitedly selected a favorite flavor, and they were as eclectic as the kids themselves.

Their picks were mint chocolate chip, vanilla, cotton candy, picnic punch, and my personal favorite, chocolate chip cookie dough.

“I come from an all-girl family with three older sisters,” Ariel Baron, age 14 said.

Shira Feen spent the summer in Johannesburg, South Africa, her mother’s native home.

All of their interests and hobbies range from sports of all kinds to reading to making art to hanging out with friends.

And their iPods are loaded with music that ranges from Katy Perry to Maroon Five to Taylor Swift to Levi Simon’s favorite, his dad. Simon’s dad is Dave Simon of the band Underdog and the owner Dave Simon’s School of Rock.

Another favorite spot for a refreshing after-school snack and to chill out with friends is the frozen yogurt shop, Chill, also in Ladue. MICDS ninth-grade class chair, Asla Zimmerman and vice chair, Lynn Kosup organized a social for returning students to MICDS. Classes resumed Aug. 23.

“We wanted to get the kids together. School starts tomorrow,” Zimmerman said.

This was their second ice cream social. “The first was largely attended by new students. We have 20 new families,” Kosup said.

They picked Chill because of the fun atmosphere, interesting interior and the large courtyard.

“It is new, so it added to the excitement of the gathering,” Sheila Kendrick said.

I conducted a survey at Baskin Robbins to determine a favorite flavor, as you can see below there were almost as many favorites as Baskin Robbins has options.

Mint Chocolate Chip–Arianna Kempainen, Laren Kempainen

Vanilla–Eli Kerbver, Tal Recht, Gina Karr

Cotton Candy–Tali Feen

Picnic Punch–Levi Simon

Cookie Dough–Ariel Baron

Piña Colada–Chole Zimmerman
