Pick Five Plus One in Frontenac and Ladue

Pastels, posies and Pujols, all signs that spring has sprung.

 People dressed in pastels, jonquils waving in the breeze, Albert Pujols in action – all sure signs that spring is here. Rain is on the way this week, though, so run through the raindrops to these happenings, something sure to elevate the spirits.

Monday, April 4. Chocolate is loved all year long, but there’s something about Easter that jump-starts that craving. Bissinger’s at Plaza Frontenac,1701 S. Lindbergh Blvd., will be full of Easter favorites all through April, from gourmet crème eggs to Easter mints and a wide variety of chocolate Easter bunnies. And, for the first time ever for Easter, they will offer chocolate-covered strawberries for one day only, Saturday, April 23, so put that on your calendar. Monday, April 4. Those who have followed the adventures of Ayla and Jondalar, the two main characters from author Jean Auel’s Earth’s Children series, will be happy to know that Auel will be discussing and signing her latest book in the series, “The Land of Painted Caves,” at 7 p.m. at the headquarters, 1604 Lindbergh Blvd. Books will be available for purchase from Puddn’nHead Books, www.puddnheadbooks.com.  This event is free. Monday, April 4.  The Fathers’ Club of St. Joseph Academy, 2307 S. Lindbergh Blvd., will be having their Rib Fest to honor outgoing president, Matt Stroble, and incoming president Dick Mehan Jr. Come, bring a friend and enjoy the delicious ribs from Rib City. Thursday, April 7.  The Circle of Learning Speakers Series at Community School, 900 N. Lay Rd., will present Dr. Robert Brooks, author of “Raising Resilient children.” This event, starting at 7 p.m. at the school, is free and open to the public. Friday, April 8. John Burroughs School, 755 S. Price Rd., will host the Bonsack Gallery Opening Reception for conceptual artist, Tom Friedman '83. A limited exhibit of Friedman’s work (curated by parent/alum Jim Probstein, parent John Van Doren and alum William Shearburn) will be in the gallery April 8 to 13. RSVP to ncusan@jburroughs.org.

Sunday, April 10. Ethical Mindfulness Meditation meets each Sunday in the foyer of the Ethical Society of St. Louis, 9001 Clayton Rd. from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. This class teaches the practice of becoming  aware of what is going on in and around you which is a powerful tool to deal with stress, promote physical and mental well-being, and awaken the senses to living ethically in the present moment.
