Pick Five Plus One in Frontenac and Ladue

The sun is out, so check out these local events.

Daylight Saving Time arrives. Can Spring be far behind? Enjoy the anticipation with these happenings in the Ladue/Frontenac area.

 Tuesday, March 15. 

The St. Louis County Library, 1640 Lindbergh Blvd., celebrates Teen Tech Week by putting on “Mix and Mash Playlists,” a program where teens create a soundtrack for their favorite book using the music site Grooveshark.com. The program begins at 7 p.m. and registration is required. Other branches will feature podcast workshops, DJ Hero competitions, an internet scavenger hunt, techno art projects, and more.  Tuesday, March 15.

The Frontenac Board of Aldermen will hold their monthly meeting at City Hall, 10555 Clayton Rd., at 7 p.m. A public hearing on the final approval of a Bricktop’s Restaurant on an outparcel at Plaza Frontenac will precede the regular meeting.  Tuesday, March 15.

A group of 22 Ladue High School junior and senior boys will  compete for the title of “Mr. Ladue” at 7 p.m. in the Ladue Performing Arts Center, 1201 S. Warson Rd. Each boy will represent his club, organization, or sport and will be escorted in by his mother, aunt, or grandmother. Following a dance routine, judges will narrow the group to 10, then five. A “50/50” and bake sale will also be held. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Proceeds will go to Habitat For Humanity of which Ladue High School is the only high school chapter in the St. Louis area. Tuesday, March 15.

The St. Joseph's Academy Science Fair for 2011 includes 81 student projects that range from observations of animal behavior, analysis of blood spatter at crime scenes, generating alternative fuels from decayed material to determining the effect of cell phone radiation on protists. The students are from the Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry and Zoology courses at the Academy. The SJA Science Fair is an annual tradition. The finalists at this fair will go on to represent the school at the Greater St. Louis Science Fair at Queeney Park.The exhibit runs through Thursday.

Thursday, March 17.  

The Bonsack Gallery on the John Burroughs School campus, 755 S. Price Rd., will host an exhibit, “Printer/Publisher, Artist/Patron: Courtney Obata and Wildwood Press,” a show of prints featuring work by internationally acclaimed artists, Valerie Hammond, Michael Berkhemer, Mary Judge, Erin McKenny, and Linda Schwarz. Maryanne Ellison Simmons, founder, printer, and publisher of the Wildwood Press in St. Louis, curated the exhibit. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. A public reception will be held Thursday, March 17 in the gallery from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.  The exhibit runs through March 29. Friday, March 18.

The St. Louis County Library Foundation will present author Jasper Fforde for a discussion and signing of the newest installment in his blockbuster Thursday Next series, “One of Our Thursdays is Missing,”  at 7:00 p.m. at Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd. The program is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase at the event from Left Bank Books. www.slcl.org or call 314-994-3300.

 Saturday, March 19.

The Earth Ethics group of the Ethical Society of St. Louis, 9001 Clayton Rd., will tour the St. Louis Science Center’s exhibit on climate change. Following the tour, they will meet for a discussion over BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch).
