Patch Picks Plenty in Frontenac and Ladue

Our towns' cups runneth over with things to do this week.

Assuming all of you have done your due diligence in your Mother’s Day shopping, Patch Picks returns with too much to leave out for the coming week, so enjoy the selections for all ages.

The St. Louis County Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd., is hosting several events this week, and all are free and open to the public. For more information, call 314-994-3300 or visit www.stcl.org.

  • 10 a.m. Tuesday  Lap Time: "Mama I Love," for ages 6 months to 2 years.
  • 6:30 p.m. Tuesday Book Bites: “Knights of the Kitchen Table” by Jon Scieszka. Read a cool book and get together with this group to talk about it. Join Book Bites for activities, snacks and discussion of this month’s selection and find out what next month’s selection will be. You can pick up your copy of the book at the Children’s Desk. The group is for ages 8-11.
  • 7 p.m. Wednesday  The Buzz Westfall Favorite Author Series presents National Book Award-winning historian Nathaniel Philbrick for a discussion and signing of his book “The Last Stand: Custer, Sitting Bull, and the Battle of Little Big Horn.” Philbrick sketches the two larger-than-life antagonists: Sitting Bull, whose charisma earned him the position of leader of the Plains Indians, and George Armstrong Custer, one of the Union's greatest cavalry officers and a man with a reputation for reckless courage. Books will be available for purchase from Left Bank Books.
  • 10 a.m. Wednesday Story Time: I Love Reading for ages 3 to 6 years.
  • 7 p.m. Thursday The St. Louis County Library Foundation features author Luanne Rice who will discuss and sign her new novel, “The Silver Boat.” A heartwarming portrait of three far-flung sisters who come home to Martha's Vineyard one last time. Their mother's beach house is the only place any of them ever found true happiness. Memories of their grandmother, mother, and their Irish father rise up and expose the fine cracks in their family myth—especially when a cache of old letters reveals enough truth to send them back to their ancestral homeland. Barnes and Noble will have books available to buy.
  • Thursday  Kids Create: 3-D Pictures. Kidsages 3 to 6 years old can bring crayons and get ready for an exciting time of crafty explorations. Registration required.
  • 7 p.m. Friday  The “Buzz” Westfall Favorite Author Series presents award-winning journalist James B. Stewart for a discussion and signing of his new book, “Tangled Webs: How False Statements are Undermining America – From Martha Stewart to Bernie Madoff.” The event will be an onstage interview moderated by Don Marsh, host of St. Louis Public Radio’s “St. Louis on the Air.”  Books will be available for purchase from Pudd’nHead Books.
  • 10 a.m. Saturday Calling all young storytellers, ages 8 to 12 years old. Come join the Storytelling Circle and learn some of the ins and outs of storytelling. Share some of your stories with the group. Registration is required and is limited.

7 p.m. Tuesday The Ethical Society of St. Louis, as part of their Responsible Public Debate Series, presents Richard Carrier, author of “Sense and Goodness without God” debating Mike McKay, president of the Skeptical Society of St. Louis, on “Is Happiness the Goal of Morality?” in the Assembly Hall, 9001 Clayton Rd. Thursday and Saturday The City of Frontenac will hold an open house and tour of its new municipal facility at 10555 Clayton Rd.  Times are 4-7 p.m. Thursday and , 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday JBS Players present Twelve Angry Jurors at Haertter Hall, on the John Burroughs campus, 755 Price Rd. Everyone is welcome. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday St. Louis HELP, a Health Equipment Lending Program is having a medical equipment donation drive at Ladue Chapel, 9450 Clayton Rd. Donations of manual and power wheelchairs, scooters, canes, crutches, walkers, shower chairs, grab bars, elevated toilet seats, portable commodes, lift chairs, seating cushions, back support, folding ramps and nearly every type of medical equipment except oxygen will be accepted. St. Louis HELP receives donations of new or previously owned medical devices from the community.
