Patch Picks Five Plus One

The first week of school means time to explore new things going on in the community, so take a peek.

Temperatures are tempering, breezes carry a hint of fall, and the excitement of a new school year is catching.  So much to do, so enjoy what you can.

Monday, August 22. St. Joseph Academy, 2307 Lindbergh Blvd., kicks off “Hello Week,” a week-long “welcoming of the freshmen by the rest of the school. An all-school mass will be followed by skits from the sophomores, juniors, seniors, and the Student Council. Next follows the time-honored tradition of giving freshmen their coveted hats which must be worn at all times during the week. The week will culminate with a barbecue and field day after an early dismissal on Friday. Tuesday, August 23. “Watermelon” will be the topic of Children’s Story Time at the St. Louis County Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd. at 7 p.m. This is the perfect way to wind down the day for kids 3 to 6 years old. For more information, call 314-994-3300 or visit www.slcl.org.

 Wednesday, August 24. The St. Louis County Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd. will feature “Dinosaurs” for their Children’s Story Time. The event, for children 3 to 6, begins at 10 a.m.  For more information, call 314-993-4400 or visit www.slcl.org.

Thursday, August 25. The St. Louis County Library Foundation will welcome astronaut and aviator Colonel William R. Pogue who will discuss and sign his memoir “But for the Grace of God.” The event will be held on Thursday, August 25, at 7:00 p.m. at Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Thursday, August 26. St. Joseph Academy, 2307 Lindbergh Blvd., will hold the Freshmen and New Parent Barbecue Social and Meeting. The BBQ will begin at 6 p.m. with the meeting to follow at 7 p.m. This is a great chance for those new to the SJA Community to meeting people. Sunday, August 28.  For peace of mind, attend Ethical Mindfulness from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the foyer of the St. Louis Ethical Society, 9001 Clayton Rd. Mindfulness Medication is the practice of becoming intentionally aware of what is going on in and around you. It is a powerful tool to deal with stress, promote physical and mental well-being, and awaken the senses to living ethically in the present moment.
