Memorial Day Weekend Activites Include Honor And Fun

The St. Louis area always has an abundance of events during holiday weekends. For this Memorial Day weekend you could go downtown for the 2011 U.S. Cellular Rib America Festival, or enjoy your favorite Greek goodies at the Greek Fest 2001 at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. In spite of pool openings and various sales, this weekend is ultimately about honoring those who died in the name of our country. So, for this week’s Get Out we thought we’d tell you what you could do to pay tribute to these fallen heroes as well as some fun things to do close to home.

Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery
Before you take off for your weekend activities, visit this National Cemetery located in our area. One of the oldest interment sites of the National Cemetery Administration, this former military post is a beautiful place to visit any day of the year, but it’s even more so on Memorial Day when the graves are marked with flowers from families.

Parking: Since this weekend is a busy one for the cemetery, parking is available at the Metro Station on Sheridan Road from where shuttle buses will take you to the cemetery.

Two Movie Openings
The First Grader and L’Amour Fou have something for everyone. The First Grader is based on a true story of a Mau Mau octogenarian who wants to learn to read after fighting to liberate his country of Kenya. Woven with the story of fighting against British colonial rule 50 years earlier, this award-winning film explores the relationship between this man and the young students in his class. With L’Amour Fou you have an award-winning documentary that explores and showcases the life of Yves Saint Laurent. Acclaimed as one of the greatest fashion designers of the twentieth century, this documentary includes appearances by Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger and Catherine Deneuve.

39th Annual Gypsy Caravan
This giant antique, craft and flea market is as much a tradition for our area on Memorial Day as is asking people “Where did you go to high school?” In addition to finding some great buys, you are helping to raise money for the Saint Louis Symphony.

Where/When: University of Missouri–St. Louis south parking lots and Millennium South Garage; Monday, May 30, 7 a.m.—5 p.m. rain or shine.

Pricing: 9 a.m.—5 p.m. $5; early bird 7 a.m.—9 a.m. $20; children under 12 are free at all times.
