Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This one must be worth about a million. I have been lucky enough to now sit in on sixth World Series in my own modern era (starting back in 1982). No, I was not there for the Gas House Gangs championship in 1926.I’ve now seen World Series play from the stands, the press box and the streets outside the stadium. Each offered its different views and unique perspectives. Fans in hotel bars and tail gate parking lots revere their Cardinals as much as those who paid $20,000 for one seat in the prized box area.Oh, I’ve covered the Olympics, the Pan …
It has been said that the Cardinals are a team that never gives up. Game six of the 2011 World Series was testament to that. Inning after inning when they fell behind in scores and it looked as though the coveted World Series title was in jeopardy, the Redbirds came back tougher and more determined. Through all of their errors and missed opportunities, the Cards prevailed and went on to win game six of the World Series. I watched every single minute of the game, surprisingly, without biting my nails to nubs. At times I found it hard to conceive how athletes of their caliber could make such …
Very best of luck to our beloved Cardinals.Half of Ladue will be in the stands. These are the folks who own the best seats in the house. You will not find any community in the world that has a stronger connection to the St. Louis Cardinals than the Village (City) of Ladue.Case in point. Andrew “Drew” Baur, Alumnus of the Year at Country Day School in 1997 was a lifelong resident of Ladue. The banker, turned team owner, alongside his lifetime pals Bill DeWitt, Jr. and Fred Hanser will be looking from above at his position at first base on the diamond located behind the Pearly Gates tonight. …
All I know for sure is that this has been one crazy, zany season for our home town St. Louis Cardinals. The only think you can count on is-nothing.Ten and a half games out in August, I was cursing Tony La Russa, and the Birds who were left for dead on the scrap heap.Tony said on KMOX one Sunday morning in August, his team was going to finish strong. Now, I was really mad. Here, they’d been messing around all season long and he’s touting an a flourish at the end. I was wondering what he’d been smoking? He knew something, the rest of us had no clue of.As if a Rally Squirrel and a tortoise and …
So we’re knotted at two apiece.Wouldn’t you just love to know the outcome of tonight’s game? One team gets to go ahead three games to two, with one or two remaining.I peeked into my desk and found tonight’s script. I’m not telling. You’ll just have to tune in and see if it’s going to be a Happy Flight or not back to Missouri. The Cardinal bats fell silent just at the wrong time. That kid, Derek Holland, about 16 years old was Cy Young 60 feet, 6 inches from home plate.Did you catch that little mustache. I didn’t think he was old enough to grow one.Must of been that pat on the bill of his cap …
My dad used to tell me about Tony Lazzeri who came up to the Yankees in 1927. The second baseman was such a dangerous hitter, opposing pitchers would issue walks to him with the bases loaded. In a lineup with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bill Dickey and Joe DiMaggio, he was often overshadowed. With Albert Pujols October predictable bash brothers routine, the Texas Rangers might not pitch to No. 5 tonight at all. In fact, they might bar his admission at the players gate in order to enter the stadium. This is the guy who blasted one off the glass windows in the playoffs in Houston. Think the guy likes…
Better watch out for all those Johnny Come Lately Cardinals fans.I’ve been there before.I once had a neighbor who stopped me at our property line. He knew I was a sports writer and he told me “You gotta help me get World Series tickets.”Huh?This guy had not attended a sports event in his entire life. He was the kind of guy who chilled out on local culture, the highest brow. He would go to the symphony and the opera, but the last place you would find him alive on Earth was in Busch Stadium. Now that the Cardinals had made the 2004 World Series, he was ready to jump on the bandwagon. He had to …
You never know who you are going to meet within the confines of Cardinal Nation.Ladue-Frontenac Patch, of late has been featuring the exceptional writing talents of transplanted Oklahoman Rhonda Weiche. Rhonda has been living in St. Louis for two years and is eager to dive into the local social scene and learn everything she can about the world of journalism. So I invited her to come along on a World Series gambit on opening day.We met up around three o’clock on the afternoon of Game 1 at Busch Stadium with the new nemeses, the Texas Rangers.First stop was the platform at the Brentwood …
A spit of rain will not dampen the enthusiasm for the Cardinals in the World Series for students at Community School, MICDS, Oak Hill or any of the other local schools in the area. MICDS' art department has produced the real thing the official "Rally Squirrel." Community School students gathered by the scores to sing 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' while students hunted for the squirrel at Oak Hill and sported Cardinals Red and White at both Beasely (JK-fourth grade) and middle school (grades 5-8) at MICDS. St. Joe students are 100 percent behind their birds. They got special permission today …
We are live at Lester’s Sports Bar and Grill in Ladue. The game just started. We are posting our trip to Kiener Plaza right now. A hush fell over the crowd and the TV’s briefly went out. They were quickly reset. First Inning It's at the bottom the first and the Cardinals made two spectacular defensive plays to get out of the inning. Chris Carpenter dove for the ball for an amazing catch. It is like rush hour at the checkout line in Macy's the place is going crazy. Second Inning At the bottom of the second, the game was still 0-0. The defense on both sides were battling it out. The tension is …
The new World Series-themed cocktail menu at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis in Clayton features drinks such as Carpenter's Nail, named after St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter.
Ballpark food and specialty martinis will be available at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis in Clayton for the next week and a half in honor of the Cardinals' trip to the World Series. "We were excited for the city and the people," said Jason Ramshaw, one of two food and beverage managers at the hotel. Food offerings will include handmade ballpark soft pretzels with spicy mustard; chicken quesadillas with pico de gallo, cilantro sour cream, pickled onions and guacamole; and beef sliders with duck-fat french fries. Ramshaw named the new martinis such as Carpenter's Nail, which features Johnnie …
Patch writers and photographers plan to be out on the route, chronicling the comings and goings from red clad Cardinal fans downtown, in Ladue and Olivette Wednesday night. The trip begins chatting it up with rally revelers in Kiener Plaza and at Busch Stadium itself. We will find out early how those hardy World Series fans are fired up. Then, as the players are being introduced to the crowd, the Patch staff go west to cover those taking in the game at Lester's Sports Bar, 9906 Clayton Rd. and the fans at Fallons Bar and Grill, 9200 Olive Blvd. in the Shoppes at Price Crossing in Olivette. …
