When it comes to the holiday season, it seems to creep up on you not slowly but all at once with a big bang. There are a few signs that are so huge, they can’t be missed, and then there are the smaller details, which you would never notice unless you took the time to actually pay attention. I have compiled a list of everything that makes the holidays the holidays. Globally: When Starbucks gets their red cups. Mid-November I find myself cheerful because the red cups are out at Starbucks, and I know that can only mean one thing: the holidays are around the corner. The peppermint hot chocolates …
I love watching TV, and fall 2011 seems to be the season for a bunch of brand new TVshows. I can recall how frantic I was trying to set about six or seven newseries recordings on my U-Verse. With already two series cancellations (The Playboy Club and Charlie’s Angels) barely three weeks in,I’m beginning to see what works when it comes to TV and what doesn’t. What Works: Original Ideas: This might be where Charlie’s Angels got it wrong. We’ve seen three strong, intelligentwomen fight crime time after time in the movies and on TV. Not even Minka Kellywas able to change that fact. America is …
Well, it's that time of year again: seniors all over are stressing about essays, teacher recs, and extracurriculars. I, too, have found myself just staring at the Common App, hoping it will fill out itself. Now that I know what to do and what not to do, I've put together a list of how to keep cool in the craziest time of year. Don't quit doing what you love. This is a big mistake. If you love photography, but are taking time away from that hobby to research colleges and study for tests, you're sure to stress out. Make sure you keep that time in your life to do the hobby that makes you happy. …
Summer has officially come to an end and the Class of 2012is ready to take their place at the top of the pyramid. After the intensesummer I had (another story for another time), I was all ready to start off theschool year and work hard. I have my new backpack, new school supplies, and anew non-procrastinating attitude I’m trying on for fit. There are a few thingsI’ve noticed this first week back, and (luck you) I’m going to share some ofthem. Seniors live the good life. That’s right. If youwant the chance to sleep in or leave school early without missing a class, stayin school kids. I’ve got …
Anyone who knows me knows that I am OBSESSED with reading. I am always reading something, and ALWAYS have a book suggestion handy for those who ask. There is always something so special about summer reading (the fun kind, not the kind for school) because whenever you go back and think about that book, you’ll be taken back in your mind to the pool or the beach, or even just that distinct smell of summer. So, I’ve put together a list of my top ten books for summer. Now, my taste is a little girly, which is why this is the “top ten summer books for teenage girls,” but guys, of course, are …
In exactly twelve days, Ladue High School will be officially be on summer break, and I, along with my fellow junior classmates will become seniors. I was recently asked what becoming a senior meant to me, and all I could imagine was filling out applications and finally finding out where I’ll be attending college. But watching the class of 2011 this year, I have come to find that being a senior is more than just the college application process, although that is a big part of it. Being a senior at Ladue High School means privileges. We don’t have to fill up every class on our schedule. If we …
We all know what historical event is happening this week. No, it’s not the fact that our ACT scores will be posted (although, they are going to be. Eek!). This Friday, pretty much every channel on TV will be covering the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. And it’s hard to ignore because not only will every channel be covering the wedding, but they’ve all begun their countdown with specials and TV movies. Let me tell you, folks, if you didn’t know their story before, all you would need to do is watch an hour of TV and you’ll know every detail of their life. But what does this mean …
Walking into the Ladue High School Performing Arts Center on April eighth, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I was attending the Second Annual Ladue Film Fest, an event where five student-made short films were shown as well as a few animated clips. A few weeks prior there had been a few promos for the occasion, which motivated me to go. And walking away from the experience, I couldn’t have been more shocked. First, these students do not receive enough credit. They put months of effort into a film that ends up being about ten minutes long, and it definitely paid off. The acting was superb…
It’s that time of year again: prom. As a Junior, it’s my first time experiencing the most notorious school party of the year. There’s a lot of question’s I’ve needed to ask myself, too. Dates or a big group? How much do I want to spend on a dress? Chicken or vegetarian option? Is that really how much a prom ticket costs? After careful consideration regarding that first question of the many that I’ve posed, I’ve decided that going in a big group not only relieves pressure for both the guys and the girls, but also makes it more fun for everyone. These days, you can’t get by just asking a person…
So if spring break hasn’t started for you yet, it will be pretty soon. And in this economy, a lot of people have opted out of vacations and instead are trying to relax over their break. Because of this, I have put together a few ways to keep spring break at home exciting, whether you’re willing to spend a little or save a little. The Ladue-Frontenac Paradise Save a little: Of course, weather in St. Louis isn’t all that reliable, but let’s say it’s a nice day outside. Pull out those lawn chairs from hibernation and set up your own personal getaway in your backyard. All you need is a smoothie (…
There’s something about awards season that makes me want to say “sign me up!” and try my luck at The Business. Maybe it’s the glamour, maybe it’s the chance to be recognized for your hard work, or maybe it’s the fact that people call your name asking “who are you wearing?” and shoving a microphone in your face. Sitting here watching the Academy Awards, the cream of the crop, I am especially interested in the youngest attendee, Hailee Steinfeld. Now, I admit, I never made it to the movies to see True Grit. And honestly, though I say every year that next year will be the year I see every movie …
When it comes to high school students, the topic of reading for fun is pretty divided. There are some people (guilty) who are complete bookworms. They're always up to date on the great new reads and love to discuss the current character love triangle and whatnot. And then there are some people that hate reading. They just can't get into it. But reading for school, an inevitable part of the curriculum, has most students leaning towards the latter of the two opinions about reading. How could a person possibly like what they're reading when not only did someone else choose the book for them, but…
Today I learned an interesting new phrase…..Cabin Fever. And no, not because I have found myself with a case of cabin fever, but because it has come to my attention that some people just don’t know what to do when there’s nothing to do! In light of this snow day, I have created a list of what to do if you simply cannot think of anything to do! So let’s start with your morning. I sure hope all of you turned off your alarms last night. If you woke up any time when it was pitch black outside….go back to sleep. Now, every perfect snow day needs a lazy breakfast. As I am writing this, I can smell …
