Who Won The Final 2012 Presidential Debate: Obama or Romney?
The debate at Lynn University in Florida on Oct. 22, 2012, is behind us. Who do you think won? And what did our audience for our Wehrenberg debate watch parties think?
Updated with results of Patch surveys.
Who won Monday night's debate between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney? It might have been Major League Baseball, as the politicians competed with Game 7 of the St. Louis Cardinals-San Francisco Giants pennant series.
But among about 60 die-hard politics watchers who joined Patch.com for debate-watching parties at two local Wehrenberg theaters, viewers called the tete-a-tete a draw.
Monday's debate was the last of three debates between the presidential candidates and the fourth in a series staged by the Commission on Presidential Debates. The vice presidential candidates faced off on Oct. 11.
The debate came 15 days before voters go to the ballot box on Nov. 6.
- Who do you think won the Oct. 22, 2012, debate? Let us know in the comments or vote in the poll below?
A narrowly pro-Romney crowd viewed the debate at the Wehrenberg's Des Peres 14 Cine. A somewhat smaller crowd at the Wehrenberg St. Charles Stadium 18 Cine gave the edge to Obama. Combined, about 60 people came out for the debates — about half of what the Wehrenberg audience for the first three debates this month.
"The president looked like the president tonight," said one visitor to the debate in St. Charles. Meanwhile, a Romney supporter in Des Peres said Romney "had facts and a plan; Obama just tried to scare voters with lies."
Most theater visitors were leaning to whichever candidate they thought won. A few undecided voters were in the audience, including one who said the debate persuaded her Romney had won and was leaning toward voting for him.
"He seemed more upbeat and positive," the voter said.
A strong Romney supporter said "he appeared more confident, less combative, more or as informed as the president—who should be an expert, of course."
Some in attendance said they wished the candidates had a chance to address more specifically what would happen if the Afghans were not prepared to handle security by the so-called withdrawal deadline of 2014.
This debate aired at the same time as Game 7 of the National League Championship Series game in San Francisco.
This third presidential debate focused on foreign policy and used a conventional Q&A format with moderator Bob Schieffer of CBS News asking questions to the candidates seated at a table.
At the first debate, conventional wisdom, pundits and observers said Romney had salvaged a flagging campaign with his performance in Denver on Oct. 3. In the next presidential debate, a town-hall-style format with questions from undecided voters, opinions were divided.

Romney absolutely won the debate. It is very easy to see that Obama lies. By the way, he doesn't even have a budget - hasn't had one in 4 years and he keeps mentioning it. Also, the poor job he did in Libya as well as the nukes that the Middle East has should give everyone pause that Obama doesn't have control. He's too busy hanging out on talk shows. Anything good that is happening is due to Hilary Clinton, not Obama!!!

How can you support Clinton and Romney? First off obama has a budget, unlike romney, he has a tax plan that he has published, unlike romney, he has specific details on how he wants to deal with other countries economies, unlike romney, and he has way better foreign policy by... you know... actually having modern foreign policy, unlike romney. I don't agree with obama on a good many things but he is a far better leader than romney and while they are both ridiculous liars (as any good factchecking site will show you) Romney takes it to a new level.

I thought Obama won. Exhibited masterful knowledge of the complexity of our foreign policy. Romney basically advocated for the current administrations handling of every issue. I can't imagine the true conservatives were glad to hear Romney's peace loving, left of center positions. Like usual, Romney was just saying what he thinks people want to hear.

Obama won the debate,he fully explained his foreign policy for the last 4 year with his experience as commander in chief,Mitt on the other hand was parroting what the president said most of the time.its time America went home to rebuild after two wars that cost trillions after 10 + year;one a misguided one the other forgotten until Obama took the helm.Under Obama's administration its allies have been urged to take equal share in managing the world at large.Mitt I had hopes for him but he just can't keep his story straight.

Romney proved that he knows less about geography than he does about world affairs! Romney is more bipolar than bipartisan ..he can not remember that the gains in education started 10 years BEFORE he was Governor, the dismal job & growth numbers came while he WAS Governor! Had he another term as Governor, he would have finished his annihilation of jobs & education in the state that loves him so much that they want to keep him out of harms way by NOT voting for him !! Romney is an elitist liar.

All Obama supporters are blind and stupid. HE IS A LIAR!!! The facts are the facts... This present day economy absolutely SUCKS. Obama said he would fix it at the beginning of his term and he has done nothing of the sort. It has only gotten worse and has indicated NO PLAN to reverse his irresponsibility. His foreign policy is great, especially when he decided to go on "The View" instead of visit Benjamin Netanyahu of Isreal for which many Americans are still shaking their heads. There are confused priorities in the Obama camp. Our nation should be TOP PRIORITY!!

Exactly, and as far as his Middle-East policy goes...it's all rhetoric because he doesn't execute what he says. It's been that way for 4 years. He's all show and no go. He can so eloquently describe how it show be but he doesn't know how to get it done. Middle-East favor of the U.S. is down 3 points since he's been in office. He says Al-Qaeda is fractured and under control...but it was Al-Qaeda that killed our embassador. Their black flag flys over the embassy. He's your proverbial "Used Car Salesamn" and a good one at that. The country is in the dumper and there are naive people that think he's done a good job. If he did nothing in the four years he's been in office, the economy would have returned to normal as it always has done in the past. How many of you understand that it is forecasted that we will go into another recession in 2013 based on all existing conditions if something isn't done?

Obama. And he is right. Romney knows nothing about our military. He just wants to build ships for the defense contractors. After.28 years in army, we will retire if he becomes CinC, not worth 30 for that. The joint chiefs of staff are not asking for more budget. We need to cut. Also get to
rid of soldiers who don't meet standards, as we lowered our standards for build up of Iraq. Also drawing down wars. AND Syria is not the only route for IRan to the sea. Geez, read a map. There are two seas by Iran. Plus, Romney said we can't kill our way out of terrorism, referring to Obama and his destruction of top Al quaeda leaders including BIN LADEN. We in the army remember the bush years and policies. We don't want to go back. Not do we feel Romney has our back. Not.republicans. They killed a fully funded jobs program for vets recently. Not do they understand that women make up nearly 20 percent of military and have been in combat for 11 years now. The double RR ticket is scary. But yes, go ahead, build more boats.

Then when we have another war to kill our way out of syria or iran, we will be worse off than now. and see how he pays for it, borrow more money from china like bush did, dont keep track of contracting dollars or arms, dont send enough troops as advised by chairman of joint chief of staff, then see where we are 9 years later....should i go on. The army is still paying for all those mistakes and Afghanistan would be a different place if we kept troops and focus on that instead of iraq. We had pushed taliban out. terrorists lost that training ground. There is reason we are in shape there. We gave them years to regroup and come back stronger into afghanistan....i have voted.

Things will be better for the next few years at least regardless of who is President. The majority of leading indicators show improvement, many for the first time since 2007. Housing starts are up and prices are increasing in most areas, not all. Too many are still looking for work but here, too, hard and soft indicators show improvement. People are buying and there is pent up demand so they will continue to. Less than 2 yrs ago, used car prices were high because they were in such demand. Now new car sales are up and so is used car inventory, pushing those prices a bit lower again. Whoever is elected will inherit the current situation which is an economy on the rise, not as fast as anyone would like, but definitely on its way. What will be different depending on the victor is what the improvements look like in two years, who will prosper more, who has what rights, who will have more confidence as they go forward and what sort of Supreme Court nominees are put forth.

He was sweating, stammering and obviously trying to choose his words carefully. “Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s, and the economic policies of the 1920s."
------------------------------------
“Gov. Romney, I'm glad that you recognize that al Qaeda is a threat,” Obama said, “because a few months ago when you were asked what's the biggest geopolitical threat facing America, you said Russia.”
“The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War's been over for 20 years,”
--------------------------------------------------
Obama is right. Mitten's does not have a clue. Mitt says Obama policy is unraveling in Mideast - even though Mideast has been full of chaos for millennia. And even though Mideast countries have made unprecedented moves towards democracy during Obama's tenure. Granted, there are setbacks and not all progress is linear.
Thus Mitt wants to score political points on deaths of Americans.
He wants to demonize Russia as a foe, to feed the new McCarthyism/Red Scare amongst tea partiers ... Socialism! Marxism! He wants to boost defense spending, and to do so, he needs a bigger enemy than the borderless, wide-ranging groups of terrorists, and teenage suicide bombers.
Mitt would make America a more dangerous place.

I agree with what's said above about the debate's ineffectiveness as to peoples preset dispositions of voting. The thing I didn't like was how the President was disrespectful, rude and argumentative the last two debated. He did not act professional or "Presidential" at all. The worst was Biden's performance. Nobody is going to vote on foreign affairs. They are voting only on the economy. Every focus group and flash poll said Romney was far and away the winner in those categories. Obama ran off all the Clinton backers. He ought to call Tulane University and consult James Carville who said, "its the economy, stupid."

Agree, people will vote with their pocketbooks. But, all the noise about foreign affairs which includes IMHO Mexico raises a big question. How many of you know about Fast and Furious? Well, almost the same thing is going on in the Middle-East and Libya. The embassador was gun-running according to a former CIA officer. I've heard about other clandestine things that Stevens was involved with but this is new. All the claims about having Al-Qaeda under control are questionable especially when we're employing them to overthrow Syria. Here are two videos that will play back to back. Believe what they say or not. http://www.familysecuritymatters.org/blog/detail/our-administration-was-working-with-the-bad-guys-must-see-interview-exposes-reason-for-libya-attack

Foolish not to weigh vote with foreign affairs. Wars cost a great deal of money. What stops (are helps start) them? Foreign affairs. Trade and allies have a huge effect on our economic well-being and security. Foreign affairs. Knowing how to smooth things over, soften them, yet still whallop those who need it, hopefully without ticking off many others, is essential. Foreign affairs chops is essential.

Obama won the debate. He was expected to win the debate as he is familiarized with the international situation everyday. That says little to nothing. What people should be concerned about is Congress and the next four years. Whichever party wins the White House will face the "no" party in Congress. If Romney wins, the Dems will block everything in the Senate. If Obama wins, the same thing we have had for the last two years. The country loses.

Right, although of the two, Romney has at least demonstrated a willingness to work across the aisle. Romney is much more centrist than Obama who is the most liberal president in our history. If your goal is a return to government that works, Romney is your better choice. Democrats will accept compromise. GOP will not accept Obama's way or the highway. Country wins more with Romney.

Obamacare was not only based on Romney's MA plan; it was proposed by the Heritage Foundation. Sticking point to other health care efforts was that the GOP demanded personal responsibility with an "individual mandate". Turned out the math only worked with the mandate, so it was adopted. In this and most others, if one looks at votes and other facets of the former Senator, he has been very Centrist, much to the consternation of much of his base. But neither side will see that if they are more party focused than objective.

That is, in my opinion, a ridiculous statement. Jobs are an economic issue. Romney is the one who has advocated getting tough on China which is manipulating its currency and stealing our IP, both are threats to your job. Obama bowed down to China. Obama has had his chance. People don't have to wonder what he is all about. We needed jobs and he gave us ObamaCare. People are going to vote on the economy and you know it, as much as you wish they wouldn't.

You are entitled to your opinion, as am I. Foreign policy will have an impact on China. Romney will not "get tough" with China: if the going gets too tough he will grab his bike and go on a mission..like he did in the past. I think we should focus on the economy..I think Romney should detail his famous tax plan, perhaps it has been shared with you & you have "fact" checked it (?) Romney's get tough with China will amount to choosing another country to out-source jobs to. I'll take ObamaCare over Romney referring everybody to the emergency room for treatment. Actually, Romney has been pretty good about "manipulating" currency..one day we have a pension, the next day Bain execs have it!

Tell that to children who have their hands and/or arms run over by a vehicle for stealing food because they are hungry.

Not all practitioners of Islam are the killers that fear mongers make them out to be. Granted, there are extremists all over, or all of them are of the religious type. The issue brought up was regarding a ring that the President wears, I get from your previous posts that you do not like him, your choice, I understand that. But, do not try some back hand approach that tries to paint him as one that condones the atrocities that you mentioned.

You're preconceived notions are out of control. You have no idea who I support and like in this election. Who says someone can't like Obama but not like the fact that he has surrounded himself with academics and theorists that have no idea how the real world works and set policies that reflect that fact?
As I said, "All religions should be acceptable. However, the extreme actions taken by some are not." Please not the word "extreme." Again, you can't read what is written and expand on what someone else says and then pervert their statement into a self serving statement of you're own. It's like a bully that goes out to pick a fight and tried to turn it around to make it look like the victim's fault when the police arrive to take a statement. You can't stand on you're own statements and facts so you have this "need" to bash others on their statements and opinions. You have no idea where I've (or others here) have been or seen with our own eyes. All that matters to you are the small, self serving opinionated ideas that you can formulate based on the altered statements of others you do not agree with.

Want a Better Economy? History Says Vote Democrat!
Personal disposable income has grown nearly 6 times more under Democratic presidents
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has grown 7 times more under Democratic presidents
Corporate profits have grown over 16% more per year under Democratic presidents (they actually declined under Republicans by an average of 4.53%/year)
Average annual compound return on the stock market has been 18 times greater under Democratic presidents (If you invested $100k for 40 years of Republican administrations you had $126k at the end, if you invested $100k for 40 years of Democrat administrations you had $3.9M at the end)
Republican presidents added 2.5 times more to the national debt than Democratic presidents
The two times the economy steered into the ditch (Great Depression and Great Recession) were during Republican, laissez faire administrations

Jean, I read the article and question some of the conclusions. Yes, under certain Democrat presidents the economy grew and was successful. That all depended on who the president was. But if the Democrat president was so good why did Democrat presidents lose to Republicans? Likewise Republican presidents lose to Democrats. There's always a lag in the economy and as I found in my business career, previous management left disasters that didn't show up immediately. Like buying a used car that didn't have the oil changed regularly by the previous owner. I'd like to add...the Democratic party of today is not the same as yesterday. It has become far more socialistic. I'm way over in word count...TBC

This is actually the TBC of initial comment 5:39pm. I got the Tolstoy message of being way over.
As for Goldfarb's comment about Obama's last four years...his comment is shallow. Yes corporate profits were up but only because they managed the expense line and utilized productivity aids. Corporate profits were up and 23 million are out of work. That's one method of managing the bottom line. Does that make sense? In addition China and outsourcing play a major role in the finacial performance of corporations today which wasn't there in the past. Corporate profits were up but sales were flat or down. In a flourishing economy corporate sales growth is up, not flat or down. The stock market though up is still not at prior levels...that's because profits are holding but growth is still hurting. This article attempts what some chartists of the stock market try to claim. Historical charts only suggest what the furure might be...otherwise there would be more millionaires made. What concerns me is when an unassuming naive individual reads such an article they might take it at face value and not question any of it and vote accordingly. That's just as bad as those who vote based on what's "Trendy." Please note that I made no comment about Obama good or bad.

As most sheep will continue to do, frame the facts to conform to your opinion.
Most can reference the simply stated adage: "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." If you choose to believe in the same rhetoric spouted from "08 with no evidence to support your belief that Obama will "NOW" follow through, factual basis will not deter you....But Shame on each of you!
You certainly do not care about the future of our children.

So Missour-ah is full of fundie morons? Who the hell cares what Missour-ah thinks? We should get with the program and split our electoral vote like Nebraska. I for one am sick of STL, Columbia, and KC (the good parts of the state by all measures) getting the shaft in national politics.

Isn't the majority of Missouri voters in the St. Louis, Kansas City and Columbia areas (excepting Springfield)? So how can those areas be getting the shaft if that's the way the majority votes?
The Missourian
12:41 pm on Sunday, October 28, 2012
I'm not talking about the "metro areas" - both of which include significant numbers of people on the Illinois and Kansas side. Subtract those places, and you're looking at more like 4M. Subtract the distant exurbs and the "metro" regions full of folks that never enter the core cities, and it's probably more like 2.5M to 3M and change, or maybe half the state. For instance, Wentzville, Troy, etc are by some odd technicality in the STL metro but their connection to STL is tenuous at best.

The Missourian...Mike K. is a one way morron, talking to hear his head rattle. This state has morphed into one where the closet racism is starting to come public, the pious christian attitude that even Christ would question, the "I got mine, who cares if anyone else gets theirs, and the propaganda spewed forth by people like MK that need to have a quick reality check is really screwing up this country & state. MK will probably retaliate with some juvenile comment (who cares..HE can suck on that).

I'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad an'-I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry an' they know supper's ready.
