Was Post-Dispatch Quip About Ladue Sidewalks Fair or Foul?

We're just catching up to this mini-editorial on plans for the $1.35 million project on McKnight Road. What did you make of it?

The Ladue City Council approved plans on Nov. 19 for a $1.35 million project to construct a 5-foot-wide sidewalk along McKnight Road.

Our story at the time pointed out that the city will pay $505,000, or 20 percent of the total. The rest is covered by a federal grant.

In a mini-editorial in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch later that week (part of a regular feature the paper writes called "Fair or Foul"), writer Kevin Horrigan notes that the decision is "fair," but goes on to say the city "has finally acknowledged that some people walk. It will build a long-needed sidewalk on its side of McKnight Road. Oddly, for a community as wealthy and conservative as Ladue, 80 percent of the $1.3 million project will be paid for by a federal grant."

What do you think of the Post-Dispatch's turn of phrase in this case? Fair or foul? Do you agree?

I think someone can't do math - since when is 20% of $1.35M equal to $505K? The correct answers are either 20% is $270K or $505K is 37.4%.

Also, Ladue = Conservative? My perception has always been that it's full of liberals filled with white-guilt, hence they vote heavily Democratic. They're just claiming their "fair-share" of goodies from the Feds.

I don't need this case to give my opinion of the Post Dispatch.
It is truly amazing how the jealousy of every Post writer is squeezed out as "political" commentary.
I wonder if the "conservative" Ladue has hired a "Union" sidewalk contractor?
Now that would settle it, once and for all.
My take? The Post is a non-starter to my daily life.
