Suburban Journals Sports Editor Dennis Barnidge Dies

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports sports editor Dennis Barnidge passed away this weekend after a battle with cancer. His funeral is Tuesday morning.

 

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Town and Country based Suburban Journals lost "long-time" Sports Editor Dennis Barnidge over the weekend. 

The article reports Barnidge, of Mehlville, passed away Saturday after a brief battle with cancer.

Barnidge, 61, grew up in Crestwood, graduated from Vianney High and Mizzou, then covered sports mostly in the Jefferson County area, according to the post. The article also notes Barnidge won numerous awards over the years.

Fenton-High Ridge Patch Editor Dan Barger worked with Barnidge at the Jefferson County Journal.

"He must have been sports editor there for 30 years or so," Barger said. "He was a fabulous writer - the best writer ever."

According to his obituary on stltoday.com, Barnidge was the founding member of the George Bush League.

Visitation was Monday 3 - 8 p.m. at Kutis Affton Chapel, 10151 Gravois Road. Barnidge's funeral begins at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Kutis Affton Chapel and moves to Assumption Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. mass. Barnidge will be buried at Interment Resurrection Cemetery.  

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Siteman Cancer Center are appreciated.

I worked with Dennis at the Jefferson County Journal. I did not know him well, but he was always pleasant. My condolences to his family and friends.

Dennis was a championship sports writer and photographer. DeSmet's Jim Goessling died this week too. This has been a tough week to endure.
