No Area Tennis Teams Qualify for the State Team Tournament

Several individuals though will be competing in the individual tournament Friday and Saturday in Springfield.

The five schools in the Ladue-Frontenac Patch coverage area (St. Joseph's Academy, MICDS, John Burroughs, Ladue and Villa Duchesne) have combined for 31 state girls team tennis championships since the current format of two classes began in 1986.

At least one of those schools had made it to the final four during those 25 years. But that streak is over as Ladue and John Burroughs each fell one match short with losses in the quarterfinals Saturday.

The Rams, who had beaten Cor Jesu 5-2 in the sectional round Saturday morning, lost to Lafayette 5-1 Saturday afternoon in the Class 2 quarterfinals.

John Burroughs, which defeated Kirksville in the sectional round, lost in the Class 1 quarterfinals to Visitation 5-2.

Thus, there will be no representation Thursday at the team portion of the state tournament.

But there will be plenty of local players in Springfield for the individual tournament which will be played Friday and Saturday at the Cooper Tennis Complex.

And several of those players have high expectations.

John Burroughs' senior Sydney Lehman hopes to continue an unprecedented run by Bomber players in Class 1 singles. Bomber players have stood at the top of the podium for the last eight years after singles championships.

Sydney Lehman has won the last two years, including last year over Katherine Desloge of MICDS in the championship match.

Both players are back in the field of 16. There will be no area players competing in Class 1 doubles at state.

Ladue's Cam Newton, who was the only Ram to win in Saturday's match against Lafayette, will try to make it two state titles in a row but this time she hopes to do it in singles. Newton and Annie Kopp won the Class 2 doubles championship last year (Ladue's Lindsey Whitehead was the Class 2 singles champion although she did not play this year).

St. Joseph's Academy qualified both of its doubles teams to the individual tournament. Taylor Revling and Grace Hyde, who finished second at state last year to Newton and Kopp, will be back and will be joined by teammates Ellie Bisig and Olivia Conway.
