MICDS Graduates 134 Seniors

Parents, teachers and other supporters gathered in the McDonnell Athletic Center for the Tuesday ceremony.

Parents, students, teachers and other supporters of the  Class of 2011 assembled in the McDonnell Athletic Center on the school's campus for the annual commencement exercises on Tuesday morning.

The seniors made their way into the chapel at 10 a.m. Instead of the standard cap and gown, each girl wore a long white gown of her choosing, while the boys wore black blazers, grey slacks and red-and-white-striped ties.

"It gives me pride to stand before you this morning with the Class of 2011," said Head of School Lisa Lyle, who is also the mother of senior Tucker Sanders-Lyle, to the crowd.

Lyle gave each of the 134 students their diplomas after the class and the crowd was addressed by MICDS Board of Trustees Chairman Stuart K. Campbell, history teacher Scott Small (the commencement speaker) and history teacher John Oleski (the dean of the Class of 2011).

Small gave a very motivational speech.

"You need to do more, be more, seek more," he said. "Continue to be the leaders you are."

After the awarding of diplomas, MICDS Alumni Association President Henry B. Pflager III inducted the Class of 2011 into the organization, and English teacher Thomas Wehling wrapped up the ceremony with a few closing remarks.

Both Oleski's and Wehling's remarks centered on the idea of the students' lives as stories to be told.

"I believe in all my heart in the story you can tell," said Wehling.

Parents and family members were feeling equally excited and eager for what their graduates' futures will bring.

"It's the most exciting day I can imagine," said Jayne Callan, mother of Nikki. "I'm excited for their futures. I'm so proud of my daughter. She is a fabulous young woman."

For some of the graduates, the realization that their time at MICDS had come to a close wasn't sinking in yet.

"It will hit us tonight I think," Blair O'Brien said. "We'll all start crying."

While the valedictorians and salutatorians were not mentioned during the ceremony, they were published in a press release. The MICDS Class of 2011 valedictorians are Grace Bridwell and Caroline Rouse. The salutatorians are Abby Lowe, Daniel Draper Lynch and Sydney Schein.
