MICDS, Clayton Need Another Day To Decide District Semifinal
Rams-Greyhounds soccer semifinal suspended due to darkness, teams will finish up with penalty kicks Wednesday at 3:45 p.m., with the winner to face Ladue in the championship on Thursday.
On Field No. 5 at MICDS High School Tuesday afternoon, top-seeded Ladue made easy work of University City, besting the Lions in 6-1 rout to advance to the Class 2 District 5 championship game on Thursday.
Ladue scored early and often, and the outcome was never in doubt. On upper field No. 3 though, district host MICDS and visiting Clayton, were playing an entirely different kind of game. And when it was over, it wasn't over, as the Rams and Greyhounds played a full regulation game, two overtime periods, and a round of penalty kicks, that left the score tied at one, and neither team able to declare itself the winner.
The Rams and 'Hounds played so hard, and for so long on Tuesday, they ran out of daylight, leaving the game officials no choice but to suspend play and send everybody home for the night.
MICDS and Clayton will now resume play at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, with a round of sudden victory penalty kicks that will send one team to the championship game against Ladue on Thursday, and the other home for the winter. Neither coach, MICDS' Terry Murray, nor Clayton's Tom Redmond could be reached for comment. But it's highly unlikely that either coach has ever dealt with a situation like this -- having to come back a day later to finish a game because of darkness.
Senior midfielder Corey Theiss scored MICDS' goal at the 27-minute mark of the first half. Clayton was able to tie the score though, with just under 10 minutes left in the second half. In the Ladue game, the Rams got two goals and two assists from junior Nathan Rushing and another stellar performance by fellow junior Eric Stuber in goal, to easily dispatch University City.
Thursday's championship game at MICDS, is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start, and will be played on Field No. 3.
