Local Physician Signs Books at Deer Creek Coffee

Dr. Cindy Haines signed copies of her book, "The New Prescription," at Deer Creek Coffee on Saturday.

Dr. Cindy Haines, who is a contributor to Patch's Moms' Council, signed copies of her new book, The New Prescription: How to Get the Best Health Care in a Broken System, at Deer Creek Coffee on Saturday morning.

The book focuses on what individuals can do to get the most out of the health care system.

"It's what I'd tell you as a friend, relative or patient," Haines said.

Ladue-Frontenac Patch sponsored the signing, with Patch Regional Editor Holly Edgell pouring free coffee for patrons at Deer Creek.

Several people purchased copies of the book for Haines to sign, including friends of hers and people who just happened to be passing by or visiting Deer Creek for their morning coffee.

"I was really looking forward to reading this book," said Dr. Kate Appleton as to why she came to the signing. "As a patient and physician, I think it will help me."

"I think it's something that many people need to see," added Bob Raleigh.

Haines, who is also a family doctor, the chief medical officer of HealthDay, president of Haines Medical Communications and adjunct professor of medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, wrote the book with Eric Metcalf, M.P.H.

"We both share an interest in helping people get better use out of the health care system," Metcalf said. "Everyone's acknowledging the problems in health care these days; no one has been touching on what individuals can do. I think this is going to be a national conversation for years to come."

If you're interested in purchasing the book, it can be found in stores at the Center for Mind, Body and SpiritLadue Pharmacy and the Ladue Crossing Barnes and Noble, or online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble's website. Haines will have another signing from 2 to 4 p.m. June 25 at Barnes and Noble.
