John Burroughs Coach Receives Prestigious Golf Award

Ellen Port was presented the Bernice Edlund award for exhibiting ideal standards for the game of golf.

At the conclusion of the 73rd Missouri women’s amateur golf championship at Bellerive Country Club, veteran golfer Ellen Port was awarded the Bernice Edlund trophy for major contributions to the game of golf.

Ginny Orthwein presented the award, which originated in 1952. The award goes to the woman who exemplifies a high degree of sportsmanship, sets an ideal standard of conduct, strictly observes the rules of the game and shows devotion to the game of golf overall.

Port has coached golf at John Burroughs for 25 years. She has won the Metropolitan Amateur championship 11 times, dating back to 1993. She has won the Missouri state women’s title seven times and was the St. Louis district champion twice and has four stroke play titles to her credit.

Port was a member of the Curtis Cup team in 1994, 1996 and an alternate in 1998. Other championships include runner-up in the U.S. Mid Amateur in 2002 and U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur medalist four different years.
