Fashion Friday: Accessorize Head to Toe
Fashion is all about the details and putting them all together.
Every season, it seems there are more fashion choices than the one before, and this season, designers offer plenty of accessory options. You could say anything goes.
Patch stopped by London-based women’s fashion retailer, Accessorize|Monsoon Children store in the Boulevard-St. Louis and locally owned shoe retailer, EJ’s Designer Shoe Outlet, both located in Clayton to find the latest trends in accessories this season.
From jewelry to handbags to hair goods to footwear you will find tribal influences, soft, feminine pieces, throwbacks to another era and the most popular look – big, bold statement making necklaces. They are huge, and we aren’t just talking about popularity. From gold necklaces to multi-colored gemstones to edgy metallic pieces; there are so many styles available. This beautiful jewelry adds instant glam to any look. Fashion tip: keep the rest of your outfit simple.
Randi Layton, store manager at Accessorize|Monsoon Children, talked about ways to accessorize an outfit.
“Overall, don’t be afraid to accessorize. It is possible to overdo, but you can do layers for a great look,” Layton said. “Add a big, chunky necklace or bracelet, but not both.”
A hard-to-miss trend in color this summer that will get you noticed – daring neon. Neon brings a pop of electric to your accessories wardrobe.
“Bold color is a hot trend for summer. You can add that burst of color with a handbag, shoes or a necklace,” Layton said.
For fall, Layton said that designers bring back the classics with real tweed, herringbone fabric and knits. Also a fun popular look for fall is whimsy and fantasy. Animals are showing up everywhere.
“Animals are going to be huge this fall. Literally, the animal is on statement pieces, not just the print. You will see foxes and elephants. Owls are huge,” Layton said.
Accessorize|Monsoon Children store offers the latest in European fashions featuring a wide variety of accessories for adults – bags, purses, jewelry, belts, hats, hair good, scarves, flip flops and other chic curiosities. They also have a small selection of beachwear and children’s clothing and accessories. This British-based retailer was founded in 1973, entered the United States approximately two years ago and opened its first store in Missouri at the Boulevard in May 2012.
Meanwhile, fashion in women’s shoes has become more of an artistic expression with intricate shapes, bold colors, wonderful patterns, floral prints and far out designs.
Heels today are not you mother’s conservative pump, they’re fun and they’re fabulous, and they are standing tall.
Want to add a trendy edginess to your look? It is all in the hardware, which is used in abundance this season. Designers have daringly added zippers, buckles, snaps, studs, and gold and silver metal embellishments to super high heels, ballerina flats, stylish sandals, and even casual sneakers are glammed up a bit.
Overall, this season’s shoes are unique, but not at all practical. Regardless, you need at least one pair of quirky or wildly artistic shoes in your wardrobe. Shop around and splurge a little for that one perfect pair.
EJ’s Shoes store manager, Larann Phipps, gave Patch a look at what is popular for men this season.
“The Sperry Top Siders are very popular with young men. They are wearing the canvas styles in checks and fashion colors,” Phipps said. “Merrell shoes are also popular for comfort.”
