Cardinal Timothy Dolan Will Not Be The Next Pope
The Ballwin native who did his seminary study in South St. Louis County was seen by some as a candidate to become the first American to head the Catholic Church. The College of Cardinals elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina Wednesday.
After five total rounds of voting at the Vatican, the college of Cardinals elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina to become Pope Wednesday.
Pope Francis, as the new Pontiff will be known, succeeds Benedict XVI, who became the first Pope to resign in 600 years. There had been speculation prior to the start of the conclave that the Roman Catholic Church was ready to elect an American as Pope. New York Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan, a Ballwin native, was seen by some as that person.
Dolan attended Holy Infant Church and School in Ballwin and attended Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in Shrewsbury.
When her son was elevated to the position of Cardinal in February 2012, Shirley Dolan, told the New York Daily News he was "born to be a priest."
