One of the John Burroughs swim parents has been running all the numbers while pouring over spreadsheets lately. By his calculation of comparison times, the Bombers’ swim team ought to finish somewhere from 5th to 8th place in the state swim championships in November.
Now those are lofty goals. The field is comprised of loaded talent from powerhouse swim programs at Lafayette, Parkway Central, SLUH, Rockhurst, Blue Springs and others.
No worries for the Bombers. They knocked off bigger Chaminade this week and followed up with a 103-73 win over rival MICDS late Friday. The Bombers are unblemished at 8-0-1 in duels this year.
The pride of JBS are junior Kevin Steinhouse (Patch’s Week 7 MVP) and his sidekick and good friend senior Adam Hotaling. The two held dominance over the Rams Friday in their home pool.
Steinhouse anchored victorious 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays and won the 50 free in 33.68 a state qualifying time.
The Bombers met state qualifying standards alone in five events Friday.
Meanwhile, Hotaling was second to touch in the 200 free (1:55.93) and first in the 100 back in 56.82, eclipsing the state qualifying time by a full 2 seconds.
MICDS is a much younger squad, feeling their way along. They did manage three first place finishes: Charles Cella was first in the 200 free (2:52.23) easily qualifying for state; Jack Finlay captured first in the 100 butterfly in 57.57 and Ellis Brown grabbed a first in the long-distance 500 free (5.28.56).
Coach Leslie Kehr was happy for her bunch of swimmers. “We won big, maybe a little bigger than I expected. We did expect to win, so we are happy about that.
We have 7 already who have qualified for state. We didn’t improve on any (events) except may the 200 free relay. “
Kehr isn’t thinking about state competition, quite yet. “If we do finish in the top 10, that would be great. We’ve never done that in our history. Right now we are undefeated and if we finish out that way, that too would be a first in school history.”
Monday, the Ladue-Frontenac Patch conducted a 1 on 1 interview with swim stars Kevin Steinhouse and Adam Hotaling. Swim fans, be sure not to miss this interview.
