At Least 12 Dead at Batman Movie Debut in Colorado

Mass murder in a public place brings the discussion front and center.

This news brief has just been updated.

The news is just breaking. A gunman stormed into a movie theater in Aurora, CO, and murdered at least 12 and injured many more.

How much of the carnage in public places can we put up with? This just happened 10 miles away from where the mass murders occurred in Columbine, CO. Could this happen in our own hometown communities?

We have a quick survey. We'd like to see what the readers in the Ladue-Frontenac Patch think about this. Tell us in the comments section and take our instant poll.

"All modern police departments such as ours in Frontenac prepare continually for active shooter situations such as the tragedy that occurred in Colorado last night," said Chief Tom Becker.

"This includes firearms and other tactical training, as well as cooperative tabletop and practical exercises with regional law enforcement agencies.  Frontenac has prepared a document of what observers should do should they detect a shooter situation."

That document can be viewed online.

It's really sad when you cannot go to a movie or a public event without getting hurt. My heart goes out to the victims and their families that were going for a simple night out.

It is really scary to think this could happen anywhere including in our home town. You cannot yell fire in a theater but it looks like you can shoot up the place.
