Akin’s Comments Put Our Area In The Spotlight

Media from around the state and country examined his controversial remarks.

This week’s round-up of what people are saying focuses on how media outlets outside of the St. Louis area are covering Missouri’s own Todd Akin, Republican Representative for the 2nd District which includes Frontenac.

During an interview with Tony Perkins, president of the ultra-conservative Family Resource Council (FRC), Akin said: “At the heart of liberalism is really a hatred for G*d.”

The Columbia Daily Tribune used Akin’s quote as a platform to discuss religion and state and included references to former Missouri Republican U.S. Senator Jack Danforth: http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/2011/jul/07/the-akin-principle/

The Springfield News-Leader interviewed people of various faiths for their reactions and included the statement Akin issued the day following his FRC interview: http://www.news-leader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2011106290390

PoliticMO.com interviewed some faith groups and Democratic activists across Missouri for their reactions including Rev. Krista Taves of the Emerson Unitarian Universalist Chapel and Faith Aloud: http://politicmo.com/2011/06/27/akin-liberalism-centered-on-hatred-for-god/

The Huffington Post focused on Akin’s appearance at a campaign stop in St. Louis County sponsored by Citizens Alliance for Missouri Patriots just a few days after the FRC interview: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/01/akin-mum-on-hatred-of-god_n_888703.html

The Atlantic focused on Akin’s subsequent comments about the FRC interview: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/06/rep-todd-akin-sort-of-apologizes-for-saying-that-liberals-hate-god/241205/
